A Root Canal Treatment, often referred to as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure performed to treat a tooth with a damaged or infected pulp, which is the innermost part of the tooth. This procedure is commonly associated with alleviating severe toothache and saving a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted.

Here are the key steps involved in a root canal treatment:

Diagnosis: The dentist will typically use X-rays to determine the extent of the infection or damage to the tooth’s pulp.

Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to numb the affected tooth and the surrounding area. This ensures that the procedure is pain-free.

Access Opening: A small access hole is drilled into the tooth, usually on the biting surface, to reach the pulp chamber.

Pulp Removal: The infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed. The dentist will also clean and shape the inside of the root canals.

Filling: After the root canals are cleaned and shaped, they are filled with a biocompatible material, typically a rubber-like substance called gutta-percha.

Sealing: The access hole is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling to prevent further infection.

Restoration: In many cases, a crown is placed on the tooth to restore its strength and appearance. This is especially important for back teeth that undergo significant biting forces.

A root canal treatment can save a tooth that might otherwise be lost due to infection or severe damage. It is a common dental procedure and is typically highly successful. After the procedure, patients may experience some mild discomfort, but this is temporary and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
